CUMC Preschool offers a quality preschool program for children ages 3 to 5, taught by licensed/certified teachers. The following information is written to give some insight into what the preschool program offers.
Literature Based Planning - At CUMC Preschool, instead of planning around themes, or around a letter of the alphabet, we plan around a good piece of children's literature. Reading development hinges upon the experiences children have with the printed word. It is important that books relate directly to children's lives in a meaningful way so that reading becomes important to them. At CUMC Preschool our job is not to "teach reading". Rather, it is to establish a love of and interest in the printed word - a love that will serve your child throughout his or her life.
Multi-Age Learning - CUMC Preschool offers multi-age classroom units for its preschool curriculum. All of our classrooms (except for Pre-Kindergarten) include children from 3 to 5 years of age. The practice of combining children of several age groups into one classroom is the current trend in preschool as well as elementary education. Children learn from each other. We at CUMC Preschool feel that our developmentally appropriate multi-aged approach to learning will provide your preschooler with a very positive experience.
Philosophy - The program is designed to meet the developmental needs of preschool aged children (3 to 5 years). It will provide experiences that enrich and support each child's cognitive, social, emotional, physical and creative development. Within the preschool's 3 hours, each child will have opportunities to create, to explore the environment, to learn problem solving and personal interaction skills, to learn concepts through first hand experiences, and to develop a positive self-concept through a balance of self directed and teacher directed activities. Opportunities for solitary play as well as group activities will be provided. Staff will serve as positive rote models and will provide care that is supportive, warm and responsive to each child's individual needs.
Muscle Room - CUMC curriculum includes a 25-minute muscle room period. Many activities and materials are used to further motor development. Our muscle room teacher provides teacher directed motor activities as well as supervises free play using the equipment that ranges from climbing and sliding, sports, tumbling, etc.
Parent Helpers - This is a cooperative program requiring that each parent assist in the classroom a specified number of times per school year. The number of parent helper days will vary depending upon the number of children enrolled in the program and the number of days your child is in the program. This policy gives the parents a chance to experience a day in the life of their preschooler, and it gives the child a wonderful opportunity to share their day with someone special.
Class Schedule - CUMC offers 2 & 3-day preschool classes and a 4 day Pre K class. Classes begin at 9:30 A.M. and conclude at 12:30 P.M.
